The Spirit of Learning® provides a solid foundation in the core competencies required for effective teaching – while exploring the dynamic relationship between philosophy and methodology with a focus on embodied learning. The program embraces and integrates the cognitive, emotional, physical and spiritual aspects of the educational process.

Offered annually since 1998, The Spirit of Learning® has remained one of the only comprehensive teacher training programs designed for the healing arts profession. Through an innovative curriculum, the Faculty of the Center for Embodied Education unite the passionate, life-giving nature of the spirit with the art and craft of teaching.

A UNIQUE TRAINING EXPERIENCE
This 110-hour curriculum is presented through 75 hours of live videoconferencing classes, which will include: lectures on educational philosophy and teaching methods, student presentations, somatic practices, observation and assessment exercises, group discussions, opportunities for quiet reflection, and discussion among colleagues. This is complimented by 35 hours of home study lessons creatively designed so that you can explore and integrate the learning material through a variety of modes: video, audio, essay, images, experiential exercises and journaling.

Enrollment is limited to 16 students to ensure a high level of group interaction and attention on individual development.

In The Spirit of Learning® you will: develop a confident and embodied teaching presence that will result in more successful learning outcomes; be able to lead your students to access their inner and outer resources to achieve their professional goals; and create ongoing experiences that sustain and enrich you as a teacher.

The program is grounded in universal archetypes and themes that facilitate greater self-awareness, compassion and understanding of the diversity of others. The specific teaching methods and professional strategies you will develop include:

  • Developing a mindful, confident and embodied presencespirit of learning student faye
  • Fostering a classroom dynamic of inclusivity and dignity
  • Delivering meaningful and engaging presentations
  • Designing creative syllabi, curricula and lesson plans
  • Utilizing non-judgmental communication skills
  • Establishing clear boundaries to build respectful relationships within a diverse population
  • Creating an inspiring learning or therapeutic environment
  • Implementing observation techniques to develop new ways of seeing and delivering effective feedback
  • Working with learning styles and multiple intelligences
  • Navigating and resolving ethical challenges
  • Incorporating somatic movement practices

A COMMUNITY OF LEARNERS
This program has a broad range of application in educational, clinical and business settings that deal with touch and somatic therapies. Those who have taken The Spirit of Learning® have included massage school, movement and yoga teachers, continuing education presenters, healthcare educators and life coaches — as well as practitioners who want to bring more of an educational component to their work with clients. The program is designed to accommodate participants with a broad range of professional experience.

REGISTRATION
Admission to this program is by application only. Enrollment is limited to just 16 students, so early application is advised. Tuition for The Spirit of Learning® 2022 Program is $2150. A $25 fee is paid along with the submission of your application, and a $200 tuition deposit is required once you are accepted into the program. Affordable installment payment plans are available.

Online class sessions will meet twice each month from August 28, 2022 – May 28, 2023

CREDENTIALING
Students who successfully complete all course requirements – which include attendance of online classes and completion of home study lessons – shall receive a certificate of completion from BTI and the Center for Embodied Education and documentation of continuing education credit.

  • Carey Smith, BA is founder and director of the Center for Embodied Education, co-owner of the Body Therapy Institute, and has achieved the designation Master Somatic Coach from Strozzi Institute.
  • Melinda Hunt, BA, LMBT is a trainer for the Center, is a former teaching assistant for BTI, owner of Durham Community Bodywork, and a student in the Masters of Social Work program at UNC-Chapel Hill.
